The Registered Nurse is responsible for utilizing the nursing process to provide individualized nursing care in all settings in the medical center where nursing is practiced. The nurse assumes the responsibility for the outcome of nursing care during a specified work period. The nurse practices within the full scope of nursing expertise with knowledge of and utilizing appropriate age related nursing standards. The nurse functions within the scope and standards of nursing practice as outlined in the North Dakota Nurse Practice Act and Administrative Rules. The nurse works closely with and my lead other professional and ancillary personnel. The Med/Surg unit provides care to patients of all ages experiencing a variety of medical illnesses including, but not limited to pulmonary, cardiovascular disease/illness, wound care, infectious diseases, GI and GU issues; as well as respite and end of life care. Patients are discharged as determined by the physician in collaboration with nursing, social services, therapies, case management and others. Cluster assignments in practice may include assessment, intervention and rehabilitation and provide specialized technology including telemetry monitoring.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Training and Experience: Graduation from an accredited school or college of nursing. Bachelor’s degree in nursing is preferred. Specific services/positions may have additional education, training or experience requirements. Must have attended a pre-licensure nursing program that included supervised clinical experience across the life span as part of the curriculum or have had a minimum of 400 hours of experience as a RN (or LPN) at another facility.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Requires working knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of nursing. Requires skill and accuracy in use of medical equipment and medications. Requires ability to perform a variety of tasks characterized by changes, in caring for patients. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status. Requires ability to interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.

Licenses, Registrations, and Certifications: Requires current licensure as a Registered Nurse in state(s) of practice. Obtains and subsequently maintains required department specific competencies and certifications (ACLS, PALS, TNCC, etc).

Working Conditions: Works in a clean, well-lighted, heated, ventilated nursing unit. Regularly exposed to infectious or contagious diseases. May be exposed to emergency or crisis situations. May be exposed to blood and body fluids on a daily basis. Regularly exposed to risk of blood-borne diseases.

Physical Requirements: Work is of medium to heavy demand, walking and standing most of the time while on duty. Considerable lifting and moving of patients. No limitations for walking, lifting or bending. Must have ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less. Must have following physical senses: vision, hearing, smelling, feeling.
