Position Purpose:

This position is responsible to become proficient in the installation, maintenance, and repair of microwave, fiber optics, local area network (LAN), mobile radio systems, and associated subsystems. This position is identified as a Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) related position, which may allow physical and/or logical access to Bulk Electric System (BES) cyber related assets or systems.


To perform effectively in this position, the incumbent must possess knowledge, at an apprentice level, of microwave, Sonet, fiber optic, and VHF and UHF radio system maintenance and repair. This is obtained through the completion of a two-year degree in electronic communications. The incumbent must develop a thorough understanding of all assigned systems to ensure transmission system reliability and rapid isolation and repair of equipment problems. Job requirements include a first, second, or general class FCC license or appropriate industrial certification, (need to have by the end of first six months employment), a valid driver’s license, ability to meet applicable Department of Transportation (DOT) driver requirements, and the ability to work with minimal supervision. This is a DOT qualified position.

Typical Physical/Mental/Environmental Demands:

This position requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, climbing, reaching, kneeling, and lifting up to 50 pounds; and occasional crawling, turning valves, pushing/pulling up to 135 pounds, and use of keyboard/computer. Equipment and tools include drills, grinders, saws, all standard microwave test equipment including AC/DC volt-ohm meters, signal generators, oscilloscopes, transmission test sets, data test sets, fusion splicer, communications monitors, RF voltmeters, power meters, spectrum analyzers, and common hand tools such as soldering irons, screwdrivers, wrenches, heat guns, pliers, sockets, wire cutters, and strippers used in the installation of microwave, fiber optic, very high frequency (VHF) /UHF radio communication equipment in substations, power plants, shops and offices, and remote microwave repeater sites. Finger dexterity, good hearing and color vision, ability to perform close work, and the ability to speak are required. Requires reading, writing, and arithmetic skills; ability to analyze data and reports, implement recommendations, develop plans and goals, and work under stress to repair microwave systems. Over 50 percent of the workday is spent indoors at a workbench or telecommunications site. Occasionally works in conditions of dirt, dust, fumes, chemicals, extreme heat and cold, vibration, and noise. Frequently operates vehicles and works around machinery, electrical risks, and at heights up to 35 feet. This position requires approximately 25 percent overnight travel. Some travel may be required during adverse weather conditions. The incumbent must remain fit for duty.

Wage: $38.56 - $44.98 per hour
